Parthiv Patel, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman, will join the Indian squad in Bangladesh as a backup for Mahendra Singh Dhoni after India's limited-overs captain suffered a muscle spasm during a training session, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Monday (February 22).
Parthiv last played a match for India in 2012 when he turned up against Sri Lanka in Brisbane in an One-Day International. He has been in good form and scored a century against India A last month in the Deodhar Trophy.
Parthiv led Gujarat to their maiden Vijay Hazare title this season and then scored 337 runs in nine games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2015-16 at an average of 42.12 and at a more than impressive strike rate of 162.80.
This is the second injury worry for India after Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the tournament and was replaced by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Shami hasn't completely recovered from his hamstring injury and has been given more time to recover ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 in India next month
Dhoni last missed a game in 2014 in Australia. He was ruled out of the first Test of the four-match series but came back to lead India in the next two Tests before announcing his retirement from the longest format of the game. Dhoni missed the Asia Cup in 2014 as well due to a Grade 1 left side injury.
India take on Bangladesh in the first match of the main phase of the tournament on February 24.
